Smooth snake
Coronella austriaca
- non-venomous species, can easily be confused
with common adder - the head is proportional with a neck, the pupils
are round - it is our smallest snake growing to a total length of
ca. 50 cm (exceptionally up to 70 cm) - its litters range from 2 – 15 baby snakes, it is
viviparous - lives in sunny, rocky hillsides with scrubland,
feeds on lizards, snakes (cannibalism occurs also), sometimes on rodents - it varies from grey to greyish brown with 2 rows of small, dark spots running down the back towards
the tail, in some angles evoking crooked images
