European green lizard
Lacerta viridis
- it is the largest lizard in Slovakia
- living in dry scrublands, borders of warm
woodlands and river valleys - it is oviparous, the female lays 5 – 25 eggs
- the lizard reaches up to 40 cm and is one of
our rare lizards able to climb to trees - it feeds on bigger insects, smaller birds and
rodents, exceptionally other species of lizards, cannibalism occurs also - the male has a yellow green colouring, olive
green or brown vertex, in the mating season it has
a bluish (turquoise) throat, the females have lighter brown-green colours, there were discovered
also melanistic (black) individuals
