Aesculapian snake
Zamenis longissimus
- non-venomous snake, living in lower deciduous regions
- its head makes a continual line with its neck, the pupils are round
- the longest snake in Slovakia with length about
200 cm - it is oviparous, a female lays 5 – 15 eggs
- its colour is brownish, the belly is plain yellow, but
on the juveniles the yellow goes beyond their head making a yellow collar - feeds on rodents, birds and young snakes also
lizards, sometimes eats also carcasses - it has been of historical significance for its role
in Roman mythology being considered
