Sycamore maple
Acer pseudoplatanus
- Description: Deciduous tree 30 meter tall with nice crown. The bark of young trees is grey and smooth, later on it becomes scaly and grey-brown.
- Leaves: Opposite, palmate with 5 pointed lobes
and 12 cm long red stipes. The leaves are coarsely toothed or serrated, pointed. - Flowers: Yellow-green, hermaphrodite in multiple racemes.
- Fruits: Paired winged seeds, green at the beginning, later light brown.
- Growing conditions: Semi-shade loving plant requiring high soil- and air humidity and nutrients.
- Habitat: In Europe and Slovakia it makes significant part of the scree woodlands.
- Use: Planted as ornamental tree in parks, there are several decorative cultivars. The wood is used for making musical instruments.
